Lner Railway Ships Clock, Extremely Rare
Clockwise is pleased to have for sale this lovely and incredibly rare eight day ships railway clock from the respected Coventry maker of high quality bulkhead clocks with this as its flagship ”Astral” brand. This clock was assigned to the Hartlepool Dock Master and is notated to this effect in the LNER records (photo of this entry included).
Dating from circa 1930 this clock has a chrome finish to the beveled glass hinged door and the dial and heavy brass case are in lovely condition; there is the usual fine timing adjustment on the dial and the original hands and bevelled glass to the hinged front door finish off this lovely piece. The high quality movement is fitted with a fine lever escapement platform and the entire piece has just been fully dismantled, serviced and cleaned along with a new mainspring fitted (the old one is visible in one photo). The restored 8 inch dial has L N E R 12429 painted to it and is in fantastic condition; the clock is covered by my three year warranty.
The ”Coventry Astral” clock brand originated with H. Williamson Ltd in Coventry around 1928, which began producing clocks under the ”Astral” name. After the company went into receivership in 1931 due to the Great Depression, the Astral and other trade names were acquired by Smiths English Clocks Ltd. in 1932.
L.N.E.R operated from 1 January 1923 until nationalisation on 1 January 1948.
This is just one of many ships clocks that I have for sale and this one is an incredibly rare find.
