John Walker Southern Railway Fusee Wall Clock, Stunning
For your consideration I am delighted to offer a stunning example of a John Walker eight day fusee drop dial wall clock originally supplied to London Chatham and Dover railways circa 1870.
The eight day anchor escapement fusee movement has rectangular plates and has been fully overhauled so benefits from my three year guarantee.
The unrestored 12 inch dial is in superb condition with ”John Walker, 1 South Molton Street, B. R (S), London 1207 S.E” applied. The rear of the dial has all the usual annotations you would demand from an authentic piece of railwayana and the clock retains a spun brass bezel and spade hands. The bezel locks securely into a tab.
The mahogany case surround has fantastic colour and patination since its restoration and is pegged to the back box in the usual classic manner. The back box has the usual side inspection door, this example having an original clock numberplate bearing the number 1207 screwed onto the inner of this door. The case further benefits from a (possibly original) fully working lock and key to the lower case door. The back of the box case is stamped 1207 S.E as is the case above the side door. Original brass stabilising hooks adorn each side of the lower mahogany veneered case.
Southern Railway records has the following information regarding this clock – last in use at Southampton docks number 44 berth canteen, and previously at Blackfriars station market office. It was taken out of railway service in December 1966. Annual maintenance cost of 3/6d
The pendulum is also stamped 1207 and a copy of the southern railway records accompanies this clock.
John Walker were manufacturers of clocks and are best known for supplying timepieces to the principal railway companies of the day. They supplied clocks and watches and also arranged maintenance contracts. John Walker started in business in 1845 and the company was still in existence as late as 1980. Their main location was 1 South Molton Street and their clocks are increasingly sought after.
This is one of the nicest and most genuine railway clocks I have seen with so much authenticity about it and is in gorgeous condition. It”s just one of many fusee and railway clocks I have coming onto the market.
