Fusee Drop Dial Striking Wall Clock

For your consideration I am delighted to offer this lovely example of an eight day striking fusee wall clock dating from circa 1910.

The wire-driven rack-striking movement has rectangular plates with shaped shoulders and benefits from an anchor escapement. It has been fully overhauled so benefits from my three year guarantee.

The twelve inch dial is in lovely condition and has been fully and tastefully restored with ”Russells Ltd, 18 Church Street, Liverpool” applied. The clock retains its original cast brass bezel and spade hands and the bezel locks securely into a tab.

The oak case has fantastic colour and patination since its restoration. The circular surround is pegged to the back box in the usual classic manner. The back box benefits from a long, lined door to each side and has a lower door to the case with a turnkey lock. There is a viewing window for the highly polished brass pendulum to be seen working.

Thomas Russell was listed as a chronometer maker in 1848. In 1860 control of the company was handed over to Thomas Robert Russell & Alfred Holgate Russell when it became known as Thomas Russell & Son and they continued in partnership until c1870 when Alfred became an independent manufacturer of watches. The company occupied a variety of premises; the early ”manufactury” was at 20 Slater Street, Liverpool and later moving to 30 Slater Street.

When Thomas & Alfred parted company Thomas moved his Watch & Chronometer Manufactury to Cathedral Works, 18 Church Street Liverpool.

Thomas Russell became arguably Liverpool”s finest watchmaker and the business produced quality watches and clocks, including the celebrated Russell Hunter pocket watch. Thomas Senior and his oldest son Thomas Robert were granted a Royal Warrant by Queen Victoria and the company became Russell”s Ltd in 1906.

This is a rare clock in gorgeous condition and it’s one of many fusee and railway clocks I have coming onto the market.
