Early Rare Magnificent Longcase Clock, Chester

Clockwise is proud to offer this amazing find of an early longcase clock from the Golden Age of clockmaking. Dating from 1725, the reign of George I, this slender trunked oak example is a collector”s dream.

Coming from the esteemed maker Joseph Smith, whose works are featured in Loomes publications and national archives, this clock has many original features of early clockmaking and some delightful quirks. The movement is an eight day outside count wheel striking piece of only three quarter size of a standard longcase movement. It has just been serviced so benefits from my three year guarantee and it strikes on a lovely original bell.

The slender oak case is surmounted by a caddy top pediment with three removable wooden finials. Once the clock has been moved to my showroom, I will be able to include the photo of the hood with its top centre finial present. The cross-banded trunk door retains its original strap hinges and a working lock and the case sits atop a stepped base. There is a delightful wooden freeze above the hood door which has inset wooden pillars.

The 10 3/4 inch square brass dial has recently been restored and has the makers” name at the bottom of the chapter ring which also includes Arabic minute markers and half hour markers. The centre of the dial is matted with an engraved working date window and also a subsidiary seconds dial. The corner spandrels are the earlier cherub and crown version and original blued steel hands compliment the overall appearance.

The is a superior original clock of the period being both elegant yet grand and is a fantastic example of early clockmaking. Joseph Smith (b. ca. 1688) was a prominent clockmaker based in Chester, England, active during the early-to-mid 18th century, working in Gloverstone. Known for high-quality, rare provincial walnut longcase and table clocks, his work often featured brass dials and lasted until after 1769.

Standing at 7 feet 5 inches tall (without the centre finial) this is a tasteful example of a fine longcase clock which would be a welcome addition to a collection.
